I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks…

Hannah: I have a lot of confusion around protein consumption, especially when building muscle. Do you have a rule of thumb of how much protein is needed? When working with a nutritionist online, at one point she had me at 112 g, my body weight was around 140. This number was super hard to hit if I was not down in protein bars and shakes. Protein bars and protein shakes do not agree with my stomach at all. After finding you, I’m doing the detox and running some labs to work on my gut health. I would really like to get protein from natural sources. Can you help with how much protein do you think is needed?
 
Gary: Hi Dr. Cabral, I have severe gut issues and I am working with a functional Dr. We have determined I have leaky gut and bacterial imbalances in the gut. I also suffer from chronic constipation. We are trying to address these things currently. I also did a food sensitivity test for IGG and had very few problems there. However, I have massive bloating and cramping in the colon with EVERY meal no matter what food I eat. I tried the pulse test for IGE and found no increase in pulse, but I am getting horrible reactions every time I eat anything. Any advice? (I know stress is making things worse and I am very stressed currently, but this seems a bit extreme to be only stress) Thank you! Gary
 
Mallory: Hi Dr. Cabral! I am 27 years old & have been sick since I was a toddler. I had 4 sinus surgeries by the time I was 11 and was on an insane amount of medication & antibiotics as a child (so much so that it stained my adult teeth). Ever since I've had extreme gut issues, anxiety, & more recently I've developed POTS & other auto immune issues. A year ago I learned about candida, pathogens, parasites, mold, etc. I started on my own parasite cleanse which resulted in an instant crawling sensation all over my body. I had an intense herxheimer reaction & even tested positive for the flu. Since then, I have found a local functional doctor who has ran several functional tests & currently has me on a protocol similar to yours for my immune system and detox. He believes this is the root to the vast majority of my issues. The problem today is that it's been a year and I still see visible pathogens & film-like in every single one of my bowel movements. I still feel this crawling sensation, although not at all as intense as it was a year ago. My question is: is it possible that I can feel the pathogens moving as they are being pulled out of my body? Have you seen patients who took this long to detox? Any advice is much appreciated! It currently feels like I'm still so far from being well.
 
Zita: Hi, What about illnesses like eating compulsive disorders or Bulimia? Can they provoke adrenal insufficiency or hypothyroidism? Kind regards, Zita
 
Catherine: Hi Stephen. I’ve been lifting for 8 years. I was a swimmer growing up. In college I went from 140-105 lbs in three years by running and eating a paleo diet. I was about 6% body fat. I gained 20 lbs by eating 2700 of a paleo diet calories in 2017. I started intuitive eating. Mid 2020, I randomly started to gain weight. I tried cutting my calories and I started binge eating as a result. I gained 50# in 8 months. I was getting debilitating migraines with aura 2019-2020. I haven’t had a period since 2018. I started cutting with a coach in March of 2021. We reversed to 2300 calories and went down from there. I lost 12 lbs and plateaued in July. We tried going lower. I went down to 1200 calories (still paleo) and still did not lose weight. I believe my hormones are messed up and the binge eating is coming back. My digestion sucks and I have to take linzess. I don’t know what to do at this point. I am sitting at 5’5” 156-158 lbs, 25/26% body fat based on Dexa. I still have no period. My mood and my energy are all over the place. I take progesterone but it doesn’t do anything. Any tips on where to go from here? I want to get back to 140#.
 
Cassandra: Hi Dr. Cabral, Since probably November, I've started noticing tiny bumps on my eyelid. They have only appeared on the top lid of my right eye. It's not like a stye that I've seen people get on the main surface of the eyelid; they show up below the lash line, like where the two lids meet when you blink. They're the same color as the rest of my skin and can be scraped away with my fingernail. They don't hurt, but I'm just wondering what would cause this and if it's a sign of something I should be concerned about. Thank you.

Christina: Hi Dr. Cabral. What do you think about eating for your blood type? I’ve been reading the book “Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type” and find it particularly interesting. Any comments or thoughts on this?
 
Ryan: Hello, I have been wondering if you know anything about the approximate ratio of black pepper to turmeric is needed to get the benefits of the bioperine? I don't want to get too much into the micro here but also would like to know practically if a tiny grind from the shaker is enough or if larger amounts are needed? Thanks in advance.
 
Cindy: Dr Cabral, I listened to Episode 760 on killing viruses. It talks about the need to ramp up your immune system, however, I have an autoimmune thyroid,(Hashimotos) and was told to avoid things that ramp up my immune system, because the immune system has already gone rogue, and it could cause the body to attack itself even more. For instance, I read to avoid echinacea and Holy Basil. Can you clear this up because I certainly would like to support immune system without causing issues with my autoimmunity. I listen all the time, so thanks for your help on this issue. Cindy
 
Liz: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thank you for putting so much time and effort into your podcasts; it’s clear that you have a drive and a need to help people help themselves! I’ve learned a lot over the past couple of years. My question is, what do you think of fucoxanthin supplements to aid in fat loss? I haven’t been able to find a lot of information on it, but what I have seen seems promising. It’s hard to find though, and I question the quality of the supplements I have been able to find. Is fucoxanthin legit? And if so how do I find a source I can trust? Thank you!
 
Bob: Hi Dr. Cabral. Love the podcast and your unbias approach to everything you cover. I know you have a lot of content on Intermittent Fasting so I apologize if my question has already been addressed, but I'm wondering what breaks a fast when doing Intermittent Fasting? I'll start my morning w/ some organic non-caffeinated herbal tea (typically some Roasted Dandelion Root or Rose Hips & Hibiscus by Traditional Medicinals, or Lemon Ginger plus Probiotics by Bigelow). Would that break my fast? Also curious about supplements. Would taking a supplement pill first thing in the morning or right before bed break a fast?
 
Crystal: Hi Dr. Cabral! I am 25 and have struggled with my weight my entire life. When I was in high school, I got very slim but then gained over 100 pounds between ages 19-20. I was then diagnosed at 20 with PCOS which has resulted in chronic dry eye syndrome and hypothyroidism. I went vegan shortly after I was diagnosed for ethical and health reasons. I was able to lose the majority of the weight, but in the past year have put a lot back on. Even with listening to your previous podcasts on PCOS, doing slow weighted workouts and steady cardio with balanced, high-protein meals, the weight does not want to shed. I'm at a loss for what to do and was wondering if you could recommend a certain diet/protocol? I want to mention that because I'm vegan and aiming to eat higher protein meals, I often use faux meats to meet my macro goals. I sway towards cleaner products, but many have PUFAs, which I know you say causes inflammation. Could this be a reason I'm not losing weight? Do I have to give these up to reach my goals? What are some better protein sources for vegans besides beans, tofu, and tempeh? Thank you so much! One of the biggest factors people cite of why they don’t exercise is “lack of time.”
 
I think this is a fair statement when you take into account being at work 10 hours a day (including travel time, getting your kids ready for school, making dinner, and then having a little downtime…
 
The problem is even if the statement is true, you still miss out on all the wellness, weight, and longevity benefits of exercising…

Tina: Hi it’s me again! LOL. My husband is 48 years old and was born with congenital heart disease. 12 years ago he had a heart transplant. For the most part he is very very healthy from what his transplant team tells him. He recently also did the big five, we are waiting for the results to get back, but my question is because he is taking so many drugs, especially his immunosuppressants, heart rejection medicine, is he still able to take all of the supplements his IHP level two practitioner will recommend? I’m wondering what your thoughts are on someone like him. Can he reverse everything just like someone who has not had a heart transplant? Should he consult his transplant team before taking anything? Just curious what your thoughts are on someone like him Who is anatomy is not the norm. Thank you so so much for all you do!
 
Kelly: Do you have expertise in working with epilepsy? My teenage son starting having seizures at 16-he is stable on medication- he is 19 I want to get him off meds and find root cause -if you can help - i will fill out paperwork for a wellness appointment kindly kelly 
 
Anonymous: A part from the usual low thyroid symptoms, is there any link between candida and high TSH? And if so, why would that be? A part from the potential malabsorption of iodine and selenium of course.
 
Angie: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thank you for your guidance through my families healing journey. I have a question regarding my 11 year old daughter. She has an enlarged tonsil on the left side of her throat (my left when I look in her throat). Our general practitioner doctor noticed it after a bout of antibiotics due to strep when she was a kindergartner, so we went to see a specialist and he said to just “watch it.” She now sees a naturopathic doctor and tested positive for HPylori and SIBO, which she has done treatment for and eradicated. She currently takes your DNS, DFVB, Vitamin D and Omega 3. Her tonsil is still the same size it was when she was 5 and nothing seems to get it to settle down. Do you have any suggestions?
 
Soussi: Thks a lot i got ur page from a friend of mine .i get hemophilia A One year now.i m 46 years old and this hemophilia not heriditaire i get some scanners but no reasons .i take no médecine now i have only médecine in case of hémorragy.the facteur 8 Is on déficit it was 0 the first tme but now 5. Percent. Is there any aliments i have to avoid to boost my imunity.and help this facteur 8 to rework again thks a lot
 
Liz: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thank you for putting so much time and effort into your podcasts; it’s clear that you have a drive and a need to help people help themselves! I’ve learned a lot over the past couple of years. My question is, what do you think of fucoxanthin supplements to aid in fat loss? I haven’t been able to find a lot of information on it, but what I have seen seems promising. It’s hard to find though, and I question the quality of the supplements I have been able to find. Is fucoxanthin legit? And if so how do I find a source I can trust? Thank you!

Lorena: Hello! You are truly incredible, I love your work. My question is regarding the adrenals. I am a 25 Vata and currently on stage 5 of adrenal fatigue (ongoing resistance). My tsh is functionally low and so are all my sex hormones (including estrogen). I'm working my way the destress protocol but I just get confused whenever I hear you say "the body is under stress and so it will produce more cortisol". Looking at thyroid for example, I know thyroid is reduced in higher levels of cortisol but in someone that is not producing enough cortisol because the adrenals are exhausted, this doesn't apply right? I guess my question is "can someone be on the fight or flight, if they are on the later stages of adrenal fatigue?". I would assume that since little cortisol is being produced, the body is not stressed and therefore not in the fight or flight?
 
Stefanie: Hi, before my question I wanted to thank you for and your team for all that do everyday. Now to my question, I am 34 yrs old and had my gallbladder removed a few years ago and from time to time I feel similar pain but to a lower level on my right side right under my ribcage. I was told that sometimes I can have stone residue on that duct between my liver and my now removed gallbladder. I have gotten sonogram, mri and nothing comes up. My cbc showed for sometime to have high cholesterol but I managed to bring that down. Currently I do macros with 50 g of fat a day and definitely seen a change in my overall health but I still have this pain. I do strength training 4 times a week and cardio twice a week, 8k steps a day. I also drink a gallon of water a day. I take omega 3, vitamin d, zinc, magnesium, and a multivitamin. How much fat should be consuming and what kind of fats ? I normally eat organic chicken breast, organic ground turkey breast, top round beef (which has lower fat), almonds, evoo cold pressed, avocado, oats, powder peanut butter, cage free eggs, some coffee cream and that's mainly what my fat sources are overall. I rarely eat processed foods, thank you.
 
Yasmin: Would you do a podcast on psoriasis please. How can we cure it? Without having to omit absolutely everything from our diet (which is what I see people do). Is it curable? Have you treated patients with skin problems like this.
 
Anonymous: Hi dr Cabral! I am a wine sales rep and so I have to drink for my job. I love wine but I get hungover off of one glass. Are there ways to support the body during drinking? I only drink a few glasses a week max but I want to make sure I’m staying healthy. Also any tips for preventing the hangover? Thanks!
 
Alison: RE: Hypothryroidism and Hashimotos Is it possible to reverse these two? I see a Dr. at Vanderbilt Univ. Medical Ctr. and he tells me it is not even a possibility.
 
Tina: Thank you for everything you do. I recently did the big five and I am working with a level two practitioner and I am so excited about my journey to wellness. I have a reverse osmosis under the sink water system. I read somewhere that the holding tank under my sink can cause the water to get moldy. So I went ahead and purchased a test kit that I took at home and sent off to the lab and the results came back telling me the below …. I’m not quite sure what to make of this. Is this water harmful to drink? From what I understand all water, from an RO system and even a Berkey will have some type of bacteria in it. The only pure water is distilled. Thank you!!! Total HPC Bacteria 580000 CFU/100ml SLR. Health Effects: Heterotrophic (carbon-consuming) bacteria include a wide range of relatively harmless microorganisms that are commonly present in natural water sources. While HPC is indeed an indicator of overall bacterial presence in your water, it is not a good indicator of health risk since many of these bacteria are not pathogenic, or likely to affect your health. On the other hand, coliform and e.coli bacteria, are well known indicators of pathogenic health risk. Common Sources: Heterotrophs are microorganisms that require organic carbon to grow and reproduce.

Typically when you go on a calorie-cutting diet to lose weight your metabolism inevitably begins to slow down after 6-12 weeks of consistent dieting…
 
This has been shown to occur over and over in the research, yet it is still the most common way people approach the topic (even the “experts”)…
 
The problem is once you’ve slowed your metabolism you need to cut even more calories in order to continue losing weight - eventually you have to eat so little that it’s nearly impossible for anyone to maintain these types of diets…

Laura: Hi! I am such a huge fan of the podcast and it has really made a huge impact on my life. I recently completed the dosha test and found out that I'm Vata: 55 Pitta: 32 Kapha: 13. It took me by surprise because I have always thought that I'm a Vata-Kapha. So considering my constitution, I was wondering if I should just follow a tridoshic diet because most vata foods aggravate my kapha and i end up gaining weight and also my pitta resulting in inflammation. The only issue is I tend to have vitamin and mineral deficiencies so things like eggs and nuts and seeds help out with that. How can I get the nutrients I need through whole food without aggravating my secondary doshas? Also, I seem to gain more weight in my upper body(arms, waist, back, chest) but not my lower body. I have tried resistance training with emphasis on the lower body but I can never seem to gain any weight there. And when I lose weight, my pitta shoulders are very clearly broader than my lower body. It is like my upper body is all pitta and kapha and my lower body is all vata. I want to gain more weight in my lower body to achieve a bit more balance. How can I get my body to be more symmetrical. through exercise or diet ? ps: I am a 25 year old female
 
Becky: Thank you so much for what you. It is truly amazing. I just listened to the episode on "How Your Habits Form Your Future" and I loved it. I'm an IHP L2 Vata mid twenties. You spoke about the importance of cardio and how it benefits your HRV. I do strength training 4x a week and 10k steps daily. I don't really have time to add more cardio on top and I don't want to lose weight. I'm already 90% vegan with the occasional wild salmon so this makes me very prone to catabolism. I take DNS, mag, balanced zinc, omega 3, vitamin d, C, etc. I do however track my HRV with my Oura ring and would love to improve it (currently around 60) so I'm happy to compromise and add cardio if that will improve my HRV. What are your thoughts? Should I perhaps replace my 10k steps with some cardio? And how long should cardio be?
 
Lisa: Hi Dr Cabral, Thank you for answering my question. My partner is in his early 40’s, healthy but doesn’t exercise much. The past couple of years he started having quite bad anxiety. When anxiety attacks happen, it takes over his whole body and he can’t sleep. This will usually last 1-2days, the following 2 days the anxiety goes away, he feels extremely tired, nauseous, hyperactive, hiccups a lot, generally has unsettled stomach and disturbed sleep. He started seeing a therapist and is seeing some progress. However is there anything else we could do to support his body better from a nutritional/medicinal point of view? We tried magnesium for better sleep but he gets upset stomach even with smaller doses. We tried adrenal soothe it didn’t seem to work either in terms of keeping him calm (although he didn’t take it regularly). Really appreciate your advice! Lisa
 
Terry: I have recently started your 21 day detox. My question is I also take Nexium for acid reflex. What is your advice for weaning myself off of this over the counter medication to start.
 
Amy: I'm a L2 IHP and I'm a little bit confused when it comes to tackling fasting with hyperthyroid clients. If someone is overweight but has low thyroid should they do the 2 days of fasting in the detox? I would assume yes but then isn't fasting detrimental for the thyroid? What about long-term? They are obviously working on the thyroid but should they do 14-16h fasts overnight? And should they workout before or after breakfast? The answer would be yes to someone on a weight loss plan but I think the answer would be no if someone has a low thyroid? Please help with those 3 questions! Thank you so much

Jen: I haven't heard you talk about the supplement Tudca yet. What is your opinion?
 
Alana: Hello doctor Cabral, I’ve been listening to your podcast for a few years now, and it’s one of the constants in my life, so I really wanted to thank you for that. It takes a lot of time and work to record these every single day, and please know that we notice that and appreciate it greatly. I wanted to ask your opinion about something I’ve been struggling with for a while: fat and cellulite on my belly. I’ve never had a flat stomach, but it had gotten worse throughout the years. I’m 43 now, have low female hormones, low thyroid and some gut issues. I’m working on all of those things with a naturopath and have done CBO protocol too. I do 30 minutes or strength training and take long walks, 5-6 days of the week. I’m not overweight and have muscle definition both in my upper and lower body, but my belly just keeps growing it seems. Is there anything you would advise for me to do to get rid of the belly fat and cellulite? I’m already taking supplements, prioritise sleep and relaxation and eat to help my hormone balance and hypothyroidism. Anything you could do to help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance! Jenny: Hi Dr. Cabral - I've been a loyal listener for several years and can't thank you enough for all that you and your team do for this community. It's truly life changing! I see a dermatologist at least annually to check for moles and early skin cancer spots from years of sun damage in my teens and twenties before I knew better. I've had several removed from my face and chest and because more seem to appear as time goes on. Is there a natural "facial peel" you would recommend that may help with these proactively? I know you've talked about a combination of green clay and ACV. I do have sensitive skin with redness. I think a facial peel may be the way to go for me, but am concerned about going to an esthetician due to the chemicals involved, but I'd like to give the skin on my face a fresh start, if that's even possible. I'd love to know your thoughts about this. Thank you.
 
Gina: Thank you for doing what you do and helping others! I am happy to have found your podcast! When I was 19 I was advised by my endocrinologist to take a radio active iodine pill to deplete my thyroid. My thyroid was hyper now hypo because of the treatment. Is there anything I can do to treat it other than being on Synthroid long term since I have nothing to work with anymore since it is no longer there? Thank you!
 
Moez: Hi Dr. Cabral. I hope you are doing well and have an amazing day. I have been seen these bumps or pimples I am not quite sure what to call them. They just look like a raised tissue or a pimple at the end of my tongue where my throat is. I have never felt anything from them whatsoever. No issues at all. However, they’ve been there for a while now 4 or 5 years or so. It could be more. As far as I remember it’s about 5 years when I first seen them. I wonder what they are and what to do about it. There’s about 4 of them two on each side. Sometimes they look big sometimes they look pretty small and not as inflamed I am assuming. I am 29 years old Male, pretty I exercise regularly 4-5 times weight lifting. I eat pretty clean mostly organic, grass feed, pasture raised etc. don’t have any issues. I used to smoke before for about 10 years then quit 4 years in now. I Don’t drink never have never will either. Take my vitamins regularly.
 
Moez: Hi again Dr. Cabral. I also have a breathing issue sometimes. It feels like I am struggling for air, I try to inhale and I just can’t get that oxygen that my body needs. In some cases no matter how many times I try to relax myself and inhale I just can’t get that oxygen. The air will go down through my throat but I don’t feel like I got the Oxygen I need. So I just stop thinking about it and in about a minute or less I’ll just breath normal and have that oxygen. I also sometimes have to move my body and be in a certain position to be able to breath and get oxygen. I had this issue since I was a little kid. I am also more of a mouth breather and sometimes sleep with my mouth open and droll as well. The issue feels worsen when I don’t eat very clean like cheat day or over eat on a meal. However, even when I am eating the cleanest it is still there but it feels a lot better. It gets better when I fast but not completely gone tho. Even when I did the 4 days fast i still felt it. I am 29 years old. 5’7 245lb. I am in a weight loss journey still. I was 365lb two years ago. I still got a way to go but taking it slowly and healthy. Side note I do plan on running the big fives pretty soon, I am just not sure if they would help with these issues, As I am feeling pretty amazing otherwise.
